Thames retains the Casey Cup

The first match-racing fixture of 2025 took place in mid-January as the women’s squad took on Vesta Rowing Club in the annual Casey Cup.

Named after Noel Casey, who sadly passed away in October last year, the Casey Cup celebrates the women’s squads of the two Putney clubs he coached at.

Thhe race took place from Putney to Mortlake on the flood tide. Thames were on Surrey. After a strong start from both crews, the Thames women were able to establish a small advantage by Barn Elms which they had extended by the Mile Post, and by Hammersmith they had a comfortable lead.

Both crews kept racing hard throughout, with Vesta continuing to fight, but Thames were able to control the race and earned a comfortable win to retain the trophy. This year it was presented by Noel’s daughter Bernadette in her father’s memory.
