Junior Squad News Round-up

The Thames junior squad recently competed at Reading Head, the Schools Head and the National Junior Sculling Head picking up medals at all three.

The J16 women’s quad of Sarah Riches, Chloe Knight, Gabby Munyard and Thais Umbelino-Purton followed their win at Hammersmith earlier in the month with a dominant performance at the Schools Head on the Tideway. They beat off opposition from Henley and Surbiton to claim the prized pink pennant, a first for Thames RC. The J17 women’s quad produced a quality performance the following day at The National Junior Sculling Head to claim a bronze medal.

The junior men’s squad had an excellent start to the month, racing Junior Quads at Reading Head and beating Windsor Boys to claim the title. They used this momentum to earn a 5th place finish at The Schools Head, where they were a mere 3 seconds off 2nd place.

The junior squad have an eventful few weeks coming up. Oscar Bird will be competing at GB Junior Spring Trials and then joining the rest of the junior squad on a training camp in Gent, where crews will be preparing for summer racing. Based on their recent performances Alex Kelly in the J16 men’s single and the J16 women’s quad of Sarah Riches, Chloe Knight, Gabby Munyard and Thais Umbelino-Purton have been selected to represent the ‘Thames London’ region at the Junior Inter-regional regatta on the 25th April.
