The annual Remenham Challenge took place on Saturday, raced on a nice calm ebb tide from Chiswick Pier to Vesta flagpole. The other Remenham clubs all showed up in force and the pennants this year were spread out among most of the member clubs, with Thames winning two of the eight categories.

Our intermediate men – the 4th 8 – stormed home in their category, finishing seventh overall and less than 30 seconds behind overall winners Molesey. Meanwhile the novice women also won their category, almost 30 seconds clear of second-placed Vesta.

Performances from the other boats, many suffering from illness and injury, were encouraging. The men’s 1st 8 were only 2 seconds off a stacked Molesey crew, with the 2nd and 3rd 8s finishing 4th and 5th respectively. The women’s 1st 8 was second behind Molesey and the 2nd and 3rd 8s also put in good showings. The men’s novices had a great row but were pipped by Staines for the win. Meanwhile the masters crews also had solid rows, although Molesey’s Leg-Ends and Kingston’s experienced women’s crew proved stronger.

The race was a great culmination of the year and sets Thames up well for 2018. Congratulations to our fellow Remenham clubs for their wins, we look forward to next year’s Challenge!
