British Junior Championships 2017
The junior squad decamped to Nottingham this weekend for their final big regatta of the season, the British Junior Championships.
Two J13s and a J14 competed in the J14 omnium on Friday in singles – an event which tests small boat skills like standing rigger dips, 360 degree turns and 500m racing. Having only picked up the sport in September it was an eye-opening experience for them and was a fun end to their first season.
Saturday was timetrials for the J16 2x, WJ16 4x, WJ18 1x and WJ18 2x with everyone making it through to the A/B semis except Jemima who placed 17th out of 38 and raced in the C final, finishing fourth.
The J16 2x and WJ18 2x progressed to the B finals. The WJ16 4x had a great battle with Henley and eventually came through to finish 2nd in their semi-final, so progressed comfortably to the A final. Their final was a similar story, coming through Henley again through the middle thousand, but third place was too far out of reach to claw back from there.
Disappointed with not making the A final, the WJ18 2x of Gabby and Chloe approached the B final knowing they had nothing to lose. Their relaxed outlook carried into the race and they took 1st place with clear water ahead of TSS. They raced so well they posted the fastest time of both finals! A frustrating but positive end to their junior rowing careers.
Our final placings were fourth for the WJ16 4x, seventh for the WJ18 2x, 12th for the J16 2x and 17th for Jemima in WJ18 1x. A good end to a great season for the juniors!
