The sun came out and the wind was uncharacteristically kind for Wallingford Regatta in early May this year. Thames sent more than 30 Thames crews to the regatta and 22 made the finals, picking up wins in four events.

Lowenna and Iona won the first trophy of the day, in women’s challenge 2-. The men matched their achievement as Tristan and Stephen also won men’s challenge 2- in the evening.

The women’s challenge 4x of Natalie, Diana, Pippa and Suzi romped home with the win almost seven seconds ahead of Nottingham.

In men’s challenge 8s, the 1st 8 improved on the heat to beat St Paul’s School’s impressive crew by two seconds. Thames B came in third.

Thames also picked up five second places, in women’s club 8s, women’s challenge 4-, and women’s junior 1x for Megan, along with men’s challenge 2- and men’s challenge 4-.

As well as the third place in challenge 8s, Thames crews were third in men’s challenge 2x, men’s club 8s, women’s challenge 2x and women’s challenge 8s.

A number of other crews also raced and performed well despite a punishing schedule for many athletes. It was a great start to the season and bodes well for the rest of the summer.
